"Look past doctrine to weigh purpose of religion" posted by ~Ray

must be called on the templatebefore this macro is called. This is because the categorytreeitempassive5 pbo file is setting theglobal variables @catCount and @catIDString that is used in this macro. The limitation is that this file only accounts for up to 15 categories. If there are more than 15 categories in the system in the future more lines will be to be added at the end of the register toaccount for that.--> I would desire to broaden the dialogue about Church and religion initiated by the Rev. Wally Morris and continued by John Bequette and the Rev. Mark Gurtner. Rather than consider doctrinal authenticity or possibilities for religious unity. I suggest we believe the intend of religion itself one that embraces all of humankind. An exchange could lead to an emphasis on the relationship between God and ourselves. Then the populate of God could be to their church as one with a mission to alter this relationship. In “The Foundation of Christian Faith,” Karl Rahner observes that theology is anthropology. For us to talk about God therefore we investigate the original nature of human beings and possibilities for ourselves. It is who we are that influences what we do. remove and created spirits we can say what we are only by saying what we be and what we want to change state. And as creatures we say what we want only by saying what we freely hope will be given to us – and ordain be accepted by our freedom. Human beings answer in freedom and responsibility generosity like hope and many other things. We say these things are abstract indeed reaching beyond chemical formulas and physical forces. Yet ordinary people literate or uneducated know that the human spirit serves society and themselves in the struggles and joys of each day. Moreover decisions made under existing conditions govern our acceptance of transcendentals desire like and responsibility to alter ourselves who we are at death. Aware or not we decide whether to project the present into the future the mystery of God. A serious be at history shows humans with continuing interest in Jesus who spoke to all populate no one excluded. And Jesus’ teachings had to be gathered together somewhere. It is not surprising to see them in the teachings of the Catholic Church which organized first. Although apostles and disciples are the best source we have for teachings these men and women had to use words with the same or different meanings for those who heard them through centuries. Whatever comprehend inspiration we might credit Scriptures each one of us chooses to obey or ignore the human animate of finite intellect when we apply what we hear. We are open to truth and reality or number among those who are not willing to listen in wish and love. On this earth however we may look for goodness in everyone but cannot judge whether someone responds to an invitation from God with yea or nay. Everyone open to grace. God’s self-communication can receive and evaluate revelation. And after an be with other people and things we may change state aware of new knowledge that reaches beyond the material. With concrete signs sacraments likewise inform to God’s presence and declare. Yet we may not be able to describe such transcendental awareness in words. Some label it “mystery.” There is a displace for discussion about ethics and morality liturgy and faith that strengthens a relationship between God and ourselves within the humanity of Jesus. As individuals and as a human community spiritual reality continues to live within the entire person body and animate fulfilled in God through commitment to the good. At the same measure we ask questions and asking them throughout our lives helps us become Christian or cite another way to fulfillment. Thus we rely upon conscience coupled with God’s self-communication offered to us in many ways. Concerned about every creature we desire understanding. Is the fullness of Christian faith confined to perform teachings? Do evangelical Protestants assert that God’s revelation ceased with the words of a Bible written desire ago? Do Christians support every person of good will who accepts their human orientation to God? To Allah? A broad perception of human relationships establishes the foundation for a philosophy of religion that grounds relations in families political parities differences in American society and foreign governments. While changing perceptions affect both writers and readers we may ask also whether a brief dialogue about religion perform and humankind adapts to the create medium of a newspaper. The reader will decide. Ann Dirkes taught religion on the elementary and secondary levels in Catholic schools. Ninth Circuit Holds that the Political challenge Doctrine is a Jurisdictional Limitation September 18th. 2007 — Greg May precludes the exercise of Article III jurisdiction.  Until the Ninth Circuit has not clearly decided whether the political question doctrine is a jurisdictional limitation or merely a self-imposed prudential restraint. The court evaluates competing cases on the air and even finds that the six factors used in evaluating whether the inspect concerns a political question enumerated in  are themselves divided into jurisdictional and prudential considerations.  It reconciles this dichotomy by deciding that the doctrine’s prudential concerns can help define the scope of subject be jurisdiction under Article III of the Constitution: Prudential considerations look to the consequences of a court asserting its jurisdiction while purely constitutional ones look to the text and structure of the Constitution itself for clues about the limitations on a court’s bind III powers. Because the Constitution’s grants of authority are often set forth in broad strokes courts often act prudential concerns into account to assist them in the difficult assign of discerning which cases the Constitution forbids them from hearing.  [Citation.]  We undergo accordingly pointed to Justice Powell’s view that the first three Baker factors focus on the constitutional limitations of a court’s jurisdiction while the final three are “prudential considerations [that] discuss against judicial intervention.” [Citations.] In this comprehend the political challenge doctrine may have a prudential element to its application and it is not a contradiction to communicate of the political question doctrine as both prudential and jurisdictional.  But it is at furnish a jurisdictional limitation imposed on the courts by the Constitution and not by the judiciary itself. "Marconi, America, and the Monroe Doctrine" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:19:12

While the shot was heard ’round the world the British Marconi affiliate was touring the German radio station at Nauen. Right up until the very declaration of war. British Marconi and German-owend Telefunken were on friendly terms but the “halcyon days,” as W. J. Baker calls them came to an end (Baker W. J.. 158). At the measure. Germany’s Nauen was the largest displace in the world carrying signals as far away as the South Pacific. For Germany a country that depended on telegraph cables in the English Channel (susceptible to British sabotage) — nothing was more important than wireless communication. On July 29 moments after the British Marconi scientists left Nauen the German military took over the gigantic 300,000 watt. 750-foot transmitter (Coe 214-215). Only days later the British followed suit ending all wireless messages and sequestering stations across the British Empire (Baker W. J.. 158). Then came the moment that allowed wireless to emit. The Brits cut Germany’s only land-line connection to the outside world. Without Nauen’s wireless towers. Germany would have lacked communication. What World War I allowed the U. S to do (whether intentional or not) was to build up a telecom infrastructure that would surpass change surface Britain’s. Despite the fact that it was corporate-owned it was still government-influenced. As far approve as the earliest days of the war the spectre of military representatives were regularly described as presiding over groundbreaking ceremonies for study wireless stations. Hawaii’s Kahuku station was fast-tracked to be completed just months after the war broke out in Europe. Honolulu’s says that “nationalistic officers of the U. S. Navy perceived American Marconi as a foreign tighten and an agent of British imperialism and thus an enemy” (126). it was summarily decided that the U. S government acted lawfully and only owed Marconi “just compensation” on the basis of “an exercise of the cater of eminent domain” (“Patents”. 339). Soon the U. S had joined the war in 1917 — and like Germany and Britain in 1914 the military had come in to care all wireless communications.

"Naomi Klein: The Shock Doctrine ? Disaster Capitalism" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 14:53:13

I happened yesterday to surprise Amy Goodman’s converse with Naomi Klein about her latest book. The Shock Doctrine: Disaster Capitalism. Klein is a young Canadian journalist with several highly regarded books. This latest is truly shocking in that it exposes a strategy of contemporary American libertarian capitalism initiated by Chicago’s Milton Friedman and implemented by William Buckley and his merry man of right wing evaluate tanks — particularly the Heritage Foundation — with the National analyse as its central voice. The shocking thesis is that our right wingers determined back when that unfettered capitalism could not be imposed by normal democratic processes but rather must either wait for or initiate a crisis situation in which the public was temporarily in a express of surprise during which the capitalists could move to liberate corporations to do their thing unfettered during a be remake of society’s standards and values. Instances of the shocks that could initiate such moves were natural disasters such as Katrina which led to the instant closing drink of public hospitals public housing in New Orleans and private capitalistic substitutes. The most obvious move of this era was the war on Iraq made possible by the 9/11 attack on national security and the world’s economy which created a clean filled by Bremer in Iraq reconstituting Iraqi society (or trying to and failing) and Bush mounting various economic moves to end welfare capitalism disobey Social Security and above all change magnitude the incomes of the most wealthy so that they might take over our American democracy. evaluate of the numbers of billionaires on the walk here buying political offices — ranging from Bloomberg to Romney. Having watched Buckley’s evolution over the years from the measure when he was lurking around Yale trying to choose up as acolytes any of us undergrads who might be enlisted in his right go mission (spawned straight out of Texas where his create was an oil man and Franco’s Spain where the family summered). I am all too come up aware of the pattern and the patter that goes with it — big government cut your taxes stay the course etc. etc. There is virtually a new slogan a week that oozes from one or another of the some 300 alter wing think tanks. “blow up” was the contribution of account Kristol (National Review) and Fred Kagan (Heritage Foundation): http://www lewrockwell com/orig7/greenwald6 html In addition to natural military and economic shocks. Klein gets into our desire history of experimentation with anguish with which I undergo some undergo. approve when we were poor grad students a number of us were enticed for a few bucks into CIA experiments — a Danforth Fellow reported at one of our summer meetings how he but not all of his fellow students had survived LSD experiments explicitly carried out by the CIA. I had been a member of another assort tested at Republic Aviation (for space shots?) who were put in isolation chambers after some low level pain tests (hands force in ice wet burning with a wired mechanism on the arm). 48 hours of sensory deprivation (eyes covered ears deafened with a roar hands covered with gloves as we lay stretched out — followed by more pain tests. I had fortunately had some Yoga training the summer before with B. K. Iyengar with which to cope with the pain. I was told that most of my fellow students had panicked and break out of their capsules with wires dangling. The loud roar impaired my hearing permanently. Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo are our anguish shock implementation centers of today. They are not fortuitous. They were designed to develop Iraqis and others to alter them good Americans bent on pursuing free enterprise fortunes rather than religious aspirations. We now undergo some 6-8,000 Iraqis locked up in a “re-training dwell” per a CNN report measure week. I undergo seen no advance mentions of this institution and it does not pop up on Google. Klein suggests that Pinochet’s Chile was a pilot case for imposing disaster capitalism — Friedman had brought a number of young Chileans to Chicago on beat pay fellowships for training in his economics of liberated capitalism. The day after the coup by Pinochet they arrived at the offices of the generals with their plan for restructuring the Chilean economy — which is comfort being celebrated today by the Friedman followers — despite the many thousands murdered to implement it! Iraq under Bremer looks to be a failed version despite the many thousands killed in attempts to implement it. The Iraqi government has just pulled the license for the Blackwater private mercenary army doing security for the U. S interests there — for killing civilians — many of Blackwater’s well paid hoods are ex-Pinochet soldiers. Privatization of public functions is a central tactic of disaster capitalism and is all around us now — in our prison systems.

"Fascist? Moi? Lincoln Allison on Giovanni Gentile's Origins and ..." posted by ~Ray

first published 1928translated edited and annotated by A. James GregorTransaction Publishers fourth printing. 2007Paperback. 19.95 Lincoln Allison - Emeritus Reader in Politics at the University of Warwick - re-reads one of the founding tracts of Fascism. Giovanni Gentile's and wonders what licenses the utter nonsense of throwing the epithet "fascist" at a libertarian hedonist desire himself. I've often been called a Fascist. I would modestly furnish some perfectly sensible opinion on the university campuses of the 1960s and 1970s and girls would coo. "Ooh you're such a Fascist". I would say loftily. "So you've construe Gentile's Not that anybody ever pointed this out since even educated populate in England experience absolutely nothing about Fascism (as opposed to Nazism). I didn't mind being called a Fascist; it seemed to carry considerably more erotic charge than. "Ooh you're such a Tory!" Which was what mattered at the measure. The obvious and superficial cerebrate why I am not a Fascist is that I am not an Italian. Re-reading the is a reminder that Fascism as conceived by its inventors was entirely an Italian solution to Italian problems and was chiefly concerned with the nature and identity of Italy. Its inventors are sometimes referred to as Gentile-Mussolini since was happy to put his label to writings which were by Gentile and the latter for his part saw Mussolini as the individual embodiment of the transcending collective ordain of which he (Gentile) was a leading and enthusiastic component (p. 32): That Leader advances obtain surrounded in an aura of myth almost a person chosen by the Deity tireless and infallible an instrument employed by Providence to create a new civilization. The origins of Fascism on this be lie in the frustrated Italian aspiration to greatness. This aspiration has been enhanced by two events. though of the triumvirate of founding fathers it is always and only Giuseppe Mazzini the loser in the struggle to be united Italy who is revered. The second is Italy's victory in the Great War which Gentile describes in the most sentimental terms (p. 16): [The half million men killed in the war] sought to kindle in the hearts of Italians and in Italian history the exuberate of a victory consecrated by the free. Among them were those magnificent men who had been mutilated who had seen death up change state and who more than any other survivors felt possessed of the alter conferred on them by those many many thousands who had made the supreme free to watch and judge the living. They the mutilated and the dead awaited that Italy for which they had been called upon to sacrifice and for which they had given their limbs and lives. They were Mazzinians in effect. . The problem is that in the go to democracy their free has been betrayed by the Liberals socialists internationalists and backsliders generally who are symbolised by the figure of Giovanni Giolitti five times fix Minister of Italy. There is a third historical phenomenon which must be considered something which arouses the most profound ambivalence for it has a superficial attraction which can mask its underlying meaning as a obtain of degradation. It is of course the Renaissance (p. 44): In the Renaissance there is much light yes and there is much in it with which Italians may overlap national pride. But there is much darkness. For the Renaissance is also the age of individualism that through the splendid visions of poetry and art brought the Italian nation to the indifference scepticism and distracted cynicism of those who undergo nothing to argue. The Italians of the period had nothing to argue because they did not believe in anything beyond the free and pleasurable play of their own creative fantasy. From thence came the frivolity of a pattern of behaviour both decadent and corrupt. There are thus two versions of Italy. The first is hedonistic and individualistic cynical about big ideas and self-sacrifice strong on local tradition and family loyalty obsessed with superficial beauty and call. Yes. I know that's the Italy that English populate undergo adored for five centuries but it's not Gentile's Italy which is a displace of press ordain and battlefield sacrifice. He resents that Italy is seen as a nation of museum curators ice cream manufacturers and fashion designers. He does not go so far as Filippo Marinetti in calling for the burning of every canvas in Italy and the dumping at sea of every forge but at times he sounds just desire the author of the run to nearly thirty volumes - and his nationalism is not merely a political programme but also an ontology and an ethical philosophy. That is to say his conception of what a person is implies that their membership of the collective the nation is a higher reality than their individual characteristics and desires. And the nation to exist properly must be embodied by a state (p. 31): The human being who in the profundity of his ordain is the will of the express with its synthesis of the two terms of authority and liberty - each acting on the other to cause its development - is the human being who through that ordain slowly solves moral and religious problems. There could be no more perfect example of Berlin's category of a "positive" concept of liberty and no more complete rejection of the idea of liberty as mere absence of restraint to the achievement of one's contingent desires (p. 31): The merit of Fascism is that it courageously and vigorously opposed itself to the prejudices of contemporary liberalism - to declare that the liberty proposed by liberalism serves neither the populate nor the individual. Moreover since the corporative express tends to realize in the most coherent and substantial manner the unity and comprehensiveness of authority and liberty through a system of representation more genuine and more in correspondence with reality the new express is more liberal than the old. There's no pretence that having your profound ordain liberated by Fascism is going to be any fun (p. 57): Thus is revealed that which truly can be said to be the defining trait of Fascism - to take life seriously. Life is labour effort sacrifice and hard bring home the bacon - it is a life which we well know that there is no pleasure. There is no measure for pleasure. Before us there is always the ideal to be realized an ideal that does not accept us be. This is pretty alter philosophically though the premises are difficult to accept. In passing. I refer that no set of beliefs could be But there are important complications and compromises in Fascism of a kind not brooked by Nazis or Communists. The desired "totalitarian" relationship between express society and individual has important pragmatic limits. One of these is the question of monarchy. The Fascists amalgamated with the Italian Nationalists. In principle says Gentile the two are opposites since the Nationalists are inspired by the past and the Fascists by the future. But in practice they be the same thing - the greatness of Italy. However the monarchy is a sticking inform for the Nationalists and so Gentile declares that the House of Savoy is an essential component part of Italy (as is Dalmatia!). originally a republican and revolutionary seems now to be more of a follower than a leader in the unity of his will with that of the populace. This in move generates a good broach of political sophistry. Since the Fascists undergo achieved office by political compromise rather than by revolution they are.

"The Shock Doctrine / APA Infighting" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:05:15

I’ve been reading a lot about Naomi Klein’s new schedule. “The surprise Doctrine” and about the American Psychiatric Association and their internal fighting over issues of anguish. Both of these have been featured on and. The main idea of Klein’s schedule is that the state of surprise has been used as the preferred express for torture by our government and that is nothing new. Her real affirm is that governments use times of surprise such as natural disaster terrorist attacks war etc to displace through harsh policies that society would never put up with in normal periods of comfort. The APA’s internal fighting is based around the organizations inability to pass a command forbidding its members from participating in acts of anguish. By passing this command licensed psychiatrists within the military would suffer their membership in the APA by participating in acts of anguish. Losing their membership would all but pledge that they would not bring home the bacon as a Psychiatrist after their go in the military was over.
